The Jimmy G hype train hit a speed bump last week against the Minnesota Vikings. 13 points is not terrible especially against one of the best defenses in the league, but three interceptions with one touchdown is not the type of way most people envisioned Garoppolo after sky high expectations from last season. Is this simply a blip or a warning that Jimmy may not be viable starting quarterback in most fantasy leagues this season? Lets compare his fantasy output through his first six starts for the 49ers to the likes of Deshaun Watson, Carson Wentz, Derek Carr and Mitch Trubisky. All five of these players have received considerable hype, whether it was pre draft or after their first few starts, so its fair to compare their first six games to see whether there is progress or correlations between these young studs.
Garoppolo ranks right in the middle of the pack in terms of fantasy output through his first six starts. It would be unfair to proclaim him an overrated fantasy starter through week one of this season. However, he boasted an adp(average draft postion) of 94 and among qbs he was drafted 12th. Compare that with Matt Ryan, Derek Carr, Phillip Rivers and Alex Smith, all quarterbacks with proven fantasy value, who on average were taken after Garoppolo, and it doesn’t make much sense.
It can’t be overstated that the 49ers offensive firepower wades near the bottom of the league, so it’s not exactly Garoppolo’s fault. Regardless, this might be a tough year for Jimmy G and if you have him on your team, it may be time to sell high or scan the waiver wire for a formidable backup. This is especially important in 2QB leagues where reliable quarterback play is imperative. Everyone is always looking for a budding young star but often times the result could be extreme volatility.
